Stamford Man Arrested for Allegedly Firing Gun in Restaurant

The man allegedly fired a handgun into the ceiling of a restaurant vestibule after a dispute.

On Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012, at approximately 1: 38 a.m., patrons at Mary Ann's Mexican Restaurant at 184 Summer St. in Stamford reported a man firing several shots into the ceiling following a dispute in the vestibule there, Capt. Richard Conklin reported Monday evening.

Conklin announced Monday the arrest of Daniel Vergev, Jr., 27, of the 700 block of Summer St., in connection to that shooting.

According to Conklin, officers arriving to the restaurant found a scene with a majority of witnesses having already fled or being uncooperative. Through the efforts of investigators, a suspect was identified several days later, Conklin said.

Conklin said officers recovered 9mm shell casings from the scene at the restaurant and investigators were eventually able to track down and execute a search warrant on Vergev, who owned a handgun permit and 9mm handgun in addition to two other handguns and a shotgun.

Vergev allegedly confessed to firing a number of rounds into the ceiling and then fleeing after authorities served the search warrant for his weapons and permit, Conklin said. His arrest warrant was served Monday.

Vergev faces charges of unlawful discharge of a firearm and first degree reckless endangerment.

Conklin said Verdev, a former bouncer at the establishment, is in the process of having his four weapons seized permanently following proceedings and will likely have his permit revoked in addition to the criminal charges.
