Stamford Fire Fighters Hotly Opposed to Mirkin for Fire Commission

Stamford’s professional fire fighters have expressed concerned about Mayor Michael Pavia’s planned appointment of Scott Mirkin to the Stamford Fire Commission, according to a release from the Stamford Professional Fire Fighters Association (SPFFA).

Last November, according to the SPFFA release, "the vast majority of Stamford voters (26,112 votes to 13,212) directed city leaders to create one and only one fire department for the City of Stamford, when citizens said yes to Charter Revision Question #2, voting for one citywide fire chief." According to the release, Mirkin has been a "leading advocate" for a second fire department.

Mirkin has served terms on the Stamford Board of Representatives, co-chaired the Public Safety and Health Committee, and served as the minority leader.

In denouncing Mirkin, the SPFFA, in its release, described his "animus towards the city’s fire fighters," comparing them in 2010 to "Hamas terrorists."

Brendan Keatley, President of the SPFFA was quoted in the release saying, "This appointment appears to be nothing more than the mayor rewarding a political crony with a patronage position as he is preparing to leave office.”

Outgoing Mayor Pavia has responded to criticism from the SPFFA before, recently addressing concerns delivered via a letter from the Association.
