Spaulding Is Stamford's New Fire Marshal

Spaulding succeeds Barry Callahan who recently retired as fire marshal.


Charles Spaulding, who has been Stamford's Assistant Fire Marshal for 19 years, has been named fire marshal.

With the promotion, Spaulding' succeeds Barry Callahan, who recently retired after 39 years of service with the department; 29 of which he has served as fire marshal, according to a joint statement issued by Mayor Michael Pavia's office with Director of Public Safety, Health and Welfare, Thaddeus K. Jankowski and Fire Chief, Antonio Conte.

Spaulding service record stretches over 34 years with the Fire Service and the Stamford community. He has held the position of Assistant Fire Marshal for the last 19 years and has been with the City of Stamford since 1979. 

According to the statement:

“Stamford is pleased to have Charles Spaulding as the newly appointed Fire Marshal.  I am confident that Fire Marshal Spaulding is the right person to continue the work that has made the City of Stamford a safe place to live,” said Mayor Pavia.  “He is a man of character, a true professional focused on public service who shares my commitment to trust and accountability.”

Fire Chief Conte concurred, “Charles Spaulding is the right person to continue the high standards embodied in the office of the Fire Marshal.”

Director Jankowski added, “I have the utmost confidence that Fire Marshal Spaulding will perform his duties to the best of his abilities to ensure the highest quality of fire marshal services in the prevention of fire and the protection of life and property. He is an experienced and dedicated professional who really cares about the community.”

Fire Marshal Spaulding received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Lincoln University in May of 1978.  He is known for his problem-solving skills, team-building and management expertise.  In addition to his dedication to the City of Stamford, he is a member of the Fairfield County Fire Marshals’ Association and Connecticut Chapter of International Association of Arson Investigators.  Fire Marshal Spaulding has served on the boards of the Yerwood Center and Stamford Historical Society for numerous years; among several other community agencies.

Fire Marshal Spaulding is the founder of the Junior Fire Marshal Program, Juvenile Fire Setter’s Program/Mentorship for boy 8 to 14 to years old. He also wrote and directed, “Surviving the Fire,” an elementary school safety program.

Fire Marshal Spaulding has been the recipient of various prestigious awards including the Omega Pi Phi Fraternity Inc., “2012 Community Service Award,” Governor Rell’s 2009 “Community Service” award, Congressman Jim Himes recognition Certificate for “Community Service,” 2006 Connecticut General Assembly official citation for “Education and Safety for Connecticut Children,” 2006 “Excellence in Leadership award” from Stamford Parent Leadership Training Institute and 1999 “Volunteer of the Year”  from the Child Care Center.
