Raccoon Trapped in Stamford Dumpster Bites Man

Stamford Animal Control told the story Monday of a man who had opened the side door of a dumpster to retrieve something from inside and was rewarded for his endeavor by a bite from a raccoon.

The man was bit in the left leg while opening the side door of a dumpster along Vineyard Lane on the morning of September 25, said shelter director Laurie Hollywood. The raccoon scampered back into the dumpster where the man was able to confine it. It was trapped and sent out for rabies testing following the incident.

The raccoon tested negative for rabies, so the man did not have to receive a round of rabies treatment, Hollywood said.

"They both startled each other," Hollywood said. "It's a good tip, I guess, if you're going to go into a dumpster, to make sure you make some noise first."
