'Professional Swindler' Arrested on Multiple Credit Card Fraud, Larceny Charges

Police reports for April 9-10. Information is supplied by the Stamford Police Department. It does not indicate convictions.

Police arrested Beverly Thomas, 51, of 485 Fairfield Ave., Stamford, on Saturday after she attempted to use a stolen credit card and issued bad checks during three separate incidents in 2010. Thomas is also facing charges for failure to appear in court for previous charges filed as far back as 2007.

According to Sgt. Peter diSpagna, on July 27 of last year, the owner of Atlantic Pizza reported to the Stamford Police Department that someone called in delivery orders four times between May and June using a credit card that was reported as stolen. Following a lengthy investigation, officers discovered that the calls were being made from a phone that belonged to Thomas' daughter. The credit card belonged to a patient of doctor's office that employs Thomas.

Police later received a complaint from a bail bondsman who said that Thomas wrote him a $2,2oo check that bounced following a Sept. 19 arrest, diSpagna said. Police also received a complaint from a landlord who rented an apartment at 39 Durant Street to Thomas. The landlord told officers that the $1,425 check Thomas gave him for the first month's rent bounced. Another check for $2,100 for two more months of rent also bounced. Thomas also gave a bad check for $425 to a real estate agent hired by the landlord. A total of three warrants were issued for her arrest.

"[Thomas] is a one-woman crime spree," diSpagna told Patch. "She is a professional swindler."
