Police: Stamford Academy Students Attack Man with Snowballs, Fists

A Bridgeport teen was arrested in connection to an assault and attempted robbery in Downtown Stamford that occurred Thursday afternoon, Stamford police announced Friday.

According to authorities, a white male walking in the area of 60 Atlantic Street at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 19, observed a group of 6 to 8 black males wearing khaki pants and green sweatshirts emblazoned with "Stamford Academy" embroidery, who all began to throw snowballs at him. Police said when he asked them to stop, the kids descended upon him and began attacking him.

Off-duty Officer Luis Vidal witnessed the attack while stopped at a stoplight and yelled for them to stop, police said. He observed a black male, identified as the charged 16-year-old party from Bridgeport, punch the victim in the face as several other members of the group attempted to steal the man's cellphone, according to authorities.

Vidal tackled and detained the juvenile who'd been striking the man and the rest of the group fled the area, police said. Back-up officers arrived and transported the juvenile to Stamford Police Juvenile Division. The victim was taken to Stamford Hospital for treatment for a broken nose and several lacerations to his face and arm.

The juvenile was charged with second-degree assault, criminal attempt at second-degree robbery, interfering with police and breach of peace.

Police are actively investigating the incident and "will aggressively attempt to identify all Stamford Academy students involved in this heinous daytime attack."
