Police: Landlord Broke into Home, Assaulted Tenant

A landlord, angry about a tenant's loud talking on a back porch, smashed through a door to continue an argument and hit the tenant with a piece of wood, police said.

Stamford police Sgt. Sean McGowan gave this account of the incident, based on police reports:

At about midnight, the landlord, Nuo Gjuraj, 59, who lives on the second floor of his building at 93 Crystal St., began arguing with his tenant on the first floor.

Gjuraj said his wife and children were trying to sleep as the tenant on the first floor and a friend were talking loudly on the back porch.

After the tenant went back in his apartment and locked the door, Gjuraj demanded to come inside.

Apparently, Gjuraj was refused entry. He then took a 34-inch-long piece of wood and smashed in a pane of glass on the door, and smashed the door itself.

When that happened, the tenant was cut by several shards of glass which hit his head, including his face.

Gjuraj then entered the apartment, striking the tenant on the back with the wood before the tenant retreated into the bathroom.

When police arrived, they found the victim with blood on his shirt and traces of blood on the floor, along with glass shards. An ambulance took the man to Stamford Hospital for treatment. He said he previously had no problems with his landlord while living in the apartment for a year.

Gjuraj was charged with second-degree burglary, second-degree assault, second-degree reckless endangerment, interfering with an officer, disorderly conduct and third-degree criminal mischief. He was held on a $25,000 bond until his scheduled appearance today, Mobday, May 13, in state Superior Court in Stamford.
