Police DUI Report: Two Cops Forced to Jump out of Way of Drunk Driver

A drunk driver from Stamford with four times the legal limit of alcohol in his system drove past two police officers who directed him to stop, Darien police said.

A 26-year-old driver with almost four times the legal limit of alcohol in his bloodstream forced two police officers at a roadway construction project to jump out of their way, according to Darien police.

The encounter took place at 11:40 a.m. Tuesday at a road project on Leroy Avenue, near West Avenue, where the officers were on special-duty traffic assignments. As the man's pickup truck drove past, it knocked over traffic cones.

Darien police gave this account (an accusation not proven in court) of the incident:

Shortly before 11:40 a.m., Przemyslaw Nagorski was driving on West Avenue when he approached the construction area.

The first of two Darien police officers, each of whom was wearing "Hi-Viz" yellow uniform shirts identifying them as police officers, directed Nagorski's green pickup truck to stop.

Instead, the officer was forced to get out of the way as Nagorski's truck rolled through, running over several traffic cones.

The second officer also signaled for the driver to stop and also had to get out of the way as the truck went past. Neither officer was injured.

After a description of the truck was broadcast to town police, it was found soon after in a downtown parking lot. Nagorski looked drunk, so he was asked to perform field sobriety tests, which he didn't pass.

Nagorski's blood-alcohol content was later tested at Darien Police Headquarters, and the result was nearly four times the legal limit of 0.08.

Nagorski, of Avery Street in Stamford, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless operation of a motor vehicle and disobeying the signal of an officer.
