Norwalk Woman Sentenced for Embezzlement from Stamford Dentist

A Norwalk woman has been sentenced to two-and-a-half years in federal prison for stealing more than $100,000 from her Stamford dentist employer, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Monday.

According to Deirdre M. Daly, U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut, Barbara O'Hara-Leone, 53, formerly of Norwalk, was sentenced to 30 months in prison and three years supervised released for embezzling from the dental practice.
Daly said O'Hara-Leona was an office manager at the practice and, beginning in June 2012, stole insurance checks issued to the victim and deposited them into her personal bank account.

She also submitted fraudulent claims to several insurance companies for work that was never completed in the names of existing patients, then also deposited those resulting checks into her personal account.

O'Hara-Leone, as part of those fraudulent claims, used the names, dates of birth and Social Security numbers of the victim's patients. She was arrested in North Carolina on April 23, 2013, pleaded guilty on October 4, 2013 to one count of wire fraud and has been ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $100,979.89.
