Gas Leak on Stamford's Hope St. Being Repaired

The leak caused the evacuation of two buildings across the street from the Springdale Fire Station.

Stamford Fire & Rescue assisted Yankee Gas crews with finding and repairing a leak on Hope Street in the area of Bennett Street Tuesday afternoon, according to Deputy Chief Tim Conroy.

"At approximately 11:07 a.m. we got a call for natural gas in [Discount Dry Clean]," Conroy said. "Upon investigation there was a very high level [of gas present]."

The chief said the the cleaners at 980 Hope St. and the neighboring apartment building had been evacuated for safety, and the buildings had their doors and windows opened up to disperse some of the buildup.

According to Conroy, Yankee Gas had been working in the area the previous 24 hours and, luckily, had been in the area to detect the leak.

"There was a leak in the street that was following service back into the cellar," Conroy said. "We believe we have the week closed out. It's been about an hour and fifteen minutes."

He said the leak had come from the main line running down the street, not the service line running into the cleaners, but no cause has been attributed to the leak yet.
