A hundred or more police officers joined family members and friends of Francis “Frank” Cronin Tuesday morning for his funeral in the Basilica of St. John the Evangelist on Atlantic Street.
Cronin, 66, after confronting cancer for more than a decade.
He was promoted to assistant chief of the in April 2010, when Chief Robert Nivakoff took control of the force. He served the city for 37 years.
Police officers representing departments from around Connecticut and surrounding states lined the street as two lines of officers on motorcycles led the hearse carrying Cronin’s body to the church, and again for the procession to Queen of Peace Cemetery on Rock Rimmon Road for his burial.
Cronin was born and raised in Boston, and a Boston police cruiser was in the procession.
Cronin is survived by his wife of 41 years, Louise Lupinacci Cronin, two daughters Christine Mayer and her husband Michael and Eileen Tufts and her husband Ryan, and his two sons Brian Cronin and Sean Cronin. He also leaves behind his two sisters, Lillian Booras and Kathleen McGilvray and her husband Russell.
