Felon Charged with Carrying Gun Near Recent Stamford Shooting

The man was allegedly carrying a gun that had the identification number filed off.

A homeless man listed as being from Greenwich was charged Tuesday for being a convicted felon who was allegedly carrying around a handgun with which he had tampered.

Police on patrol in the area of Greenwich Avenue as part of an increased police presence following a weekend shooting at Cut Masters on Richmond Hill Avenue over the weekend spotted a group of three males police said were acting suspicious.

When police approached the group, they allegedly began walking faster in an attempt to avoid the authorities. Four officers eventually stopped the group and the suspect, identified as Dayvon Kearney, 27, allegedly put his hands in his pockets and would not remove them.

Police said he became belligerent and became screaming at authorities at the scene. They put the man in cuffs and searched him for their safety, police said, and that's when they discovered they discovered a .380 handgun in his waistband.

Police said the numbers had been filed off the gun. Additionally, police said it was fully loaded with a bulletin the chamber. The origins of the gun is still being investigated, police said.

Kearney was convicted in 2011 on charged of being a convicted felon in criminal possession of a handgun, police said. He was early Wednesday with criminal possession of a pistol, illegally carrying a pistol without a permit and illegal alteration of a pistol's identification numbers.

He was held on a $100,000 bond and scheduled to appear in court Wednesday, but police said Kearney was complaining of an eye issue and was taken to Stamford Hospital to receive treatment.
