El Salvadorian National Serving Sentence for Illegal Entry

Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut Deirdre M. Daly,  has announced that Mauricio A. Madrid, also known as Mauricio Nava-Morales, 35, a citizen of El Salvador, was sentenced to six months of imprisonment for illegally reentering the United States after he was deported.

Madrid was sentenced July 1 by United States District Judge Janet C. Hall in New Haven, according to a release issued by Daly's office.

According to court documents and statements made in court, between September 2008 and August 2010, Madrid was removed from the United States to El Salvador on three separate occasions. Madrid again returned to the U.S. and, on July 30, 2012, he was arrested by Stamford Police and subsequently convicted of driving under the influence, second degree assault, interfering/resisting arrest and assault on personnel.

On Jan. 31, 2013, he was sentenced to six years of incarceration, suspended after 25 months. Judge Hall ordered that Madrid begin serving his six-month federal sentence after his release from state custody. Madrid has been detained since his arrest. On Feb. 27, 2013, he pleaded guilty to one count of illegal reentry of a removed alien. Since the age of 23, Madrid has been arrested at least 15 times while in the U.S.

The case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Enforcement and Removal Operations, with the assistance of the Stamford Police Department, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Deborah R. Slater.
