City Man Sentenced to Prison on Child Pornography Charges

Ten years on state's sex crimes registry also required as part of plea agreement.

A Stamford man arrested last October for possession of child pornography must serve at least two years in prison in accordance with a plea agreement announced Friday in in Stamford.

John J. Liska was sentenced to seven years in jail, suspended after four years, plus 10 years probation. It is mandatory by state statute that he be imprisoned for two years.

Under the agreement, Liska will have to be registered in the state’s sex offender registry for 10 years and receive sex offender treatment and counseling.

Judge Richard F. Comerford Jr. imposed the sentence, which was agreed to in negotiations between Liska’s attorney, Robert S. Bello, of Stamford firm Bello, Lapine & Cassone L.L.P., and Assistant State’s Attorney Richard J. Colangelo Jr.

Liska, 54, was arrested Oct. 15 on charges of first-degree illegal possession of child pornography, promoting a minor in an obscene performance, and obscenity. He was released from custody after posting a $10,000 bond.

Although he is a Stamford resident, Darien Police obtained an arrest warrant for Liska because it initially appeared the images were downloaded within the town’s jurisdiction. Following Liska’s arrest, Darien Police Sgt. Jeremiah Marron said Darien and executed a search and seizure warrant jointly at his 26 Whitmore La. residence.

During Friday’s proceeding, Colangelo said police found 40 images of child pornography on Liska’s home computer.
