MAY IS LYME DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT: AND 5K RACE

May is Lyme disease awareness month in Connecticut. Governor's proclamation coincides with a 5k Walk/Run Race Against Lyme on April 29th.

I have on my desk the proclamation from Governor Malloy declaring May 2012 to be Lyme Disease Awareness Month.  In the proclamation Gov. Malloy states:

  1. 95% of Lyme disease cases in 2009 came from 12 states, of which Connecticut is one.
  2. Ways to reduce chance of infection include avoiding high grass and leaf litter, using repellent containing 20% or more DEET and products that contain permethrin to treat clothing and gear, bathing and showering after coming indoors, and conducting full body tick checks after coming indoors.

And here’s a timely way for your family to support Lyme disease research as we ease into May: participate in The Race Against Lyme 5k Walk/Run at Cove Island Park, Stamford on Sunday April 29th at 9am. There will be activities for all levels – 5k race to ¼ mile walk:

Stamford's Mayor Michael Pavia is expected and families will be coming from all over New England. A leading Lyme disease researcher will underline the theme of the event by sharing a few words about the great strides being made toward more reliable diagnostic testing and developing treatments for post treatment Lyme disease syndrome, thanks to funding from Time for Lyme.
