S. Rudy Gatto, passed away peacefully at his home in Stamford on June 10, 2014 surrounded by his loyal friends and loving family. He was 78.

Mr. Gatto was born in Reggio Calabria, Italy on Jan. 6, 1936, son of the late Rocco and Rosa (Cagliuso) Gatto.

In 1961, Mr. Gatto boarded the Leonardo De Vinci, and set sail from a port in Genoa, Italy. He arrived to the United States with only a few dollars in his pocket and a vision of opportunity in his mind.

The former Italian navy man took his first stateside job in a factory where he worked on an assembly line. Within a short period of time he became discouraged by the limitations of his employment. Then married and with a family to care for, he decided that it was time to pursue other opportunities. With a small savings in the bank, he invested in his very first business - The S. Rudy Gatto Painting Company. Over a decade later, this successful business grew to become a full service construction company.

With a passion for entrepreneurship, Mr. Gatto continued to expand his business into a real estate development company. In 1979, Mr. Gatto completed his first major project, known as the Southbury Shopping Plaza. The shopping center grew to become a local landmark, and other significant projects followed.

Mr. Gatto is survived by his loving wife Mary Ann Gatto, his son Christopher Gatto and his wife Laura S. Gatto, and their children, Gregory and Benjamin of Darien, his daughter Evana Gatto of Darien, and his sister Germana (Gatto) Andreoli of Genoa, Italy.

Besides his parents, Mr. Gatto is predeceased by his brother Franco, his sister Eva, and his sister Ivana.

A funeral procession will leave the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford, on Tuesday, June 17, at 10:20 a.m. and proceed to Sacred Heart RC Church, 37 Schuyler Ave., Stamford, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at St. John's RC Cemetery, Darien.
