Are you one of those people who secretly rejoice at the grocery store when you see an open lane at the self check-out aisle? Well then, are you in for a treat the next time you visit the Ferguson Library. The Main Library on Bedford and Broad Streets has recently installed sleek, up-to-date machines near the circulation desk that make borrowing any item simple and fast. To test one, I popped downstairs and, after browsing around to find some great titles, I walked right up to one of the white consoles. After waving my library card around, the animated screen indicated that I should start checking out. The great thing about this machine is that you don’t have to actually scan any item. All you do is place the book (or magazine, or DVD, or audio book, etc…) on the platform and voila! – your item is checked out. It’s so easy, even small children can lend a hand. At the end of the process, a receipt zips out that lists your materials and the due date. It all went without a hitch, but of course if you do have questions, the circulation desk employees are happy to help. So drop by the Library soon and try the new self check-out yourself – it’s accurate, easy and most importantly, fast!
