Capturing Creativity

Capturing Creativity

Sarah Maddox

Two local teens spent their summer giving back to young people in the community by combining their love of photography with their desire to help children. Working with the charity Kids Helping Kids, an organization that encourages young people to develop their leadership skills through youth led projects, Cara Petrucci and Monika Gabriele ran a photography class for 3rd graders called “Capturing Creativity”. The class was a big hit with the children. “The kids were really into it, and everybody had a great time,” said Cara.

The idea for the class came about during a Kids Helping Kids meeting in June. Cara and Monika, both New Canaan residents, decided to hold the classes at the Yerwood Center in Stamford, a community center that is dedicated to empowering young minds, which made it the perfect location for the classes.

During the classes children were taught how to use the donated cameras and many of its features. “Our main goal was to allow kids to express themselves creatively while providing an opportunity to have fun,” said Cara. The students were encouraged to open their minds to seeing the world around them in a new way. They took pictures around the Yerwood Center and even ventured outside to snap photos in the summer sun. After the classes ended, the pictures were developed and brought in so the new photographers could see their work.

Due to the success of the class, Cara and Monika are hoping to hold another session during the school year. For more information on Kids Helping Kids and their other ongoing projects go to kidshelpingkidsct.org.
