Is danger lurking you’re your dryer vent?

Dryer Vent

  • There are over 1500 Dryer Vent fires in the USA every year.
  • When was the last time your dyer vent was checked?
  • ½” of lint build up in a 4” dryer vent reduces the dryer’s efficiency by 44%, increasing drying times (wasting energy), building heat in the dryer (shortening the life of the dryer) and increasing your chance of a dryer vent fire.
  • Never use plastic for a dryer vent (not to code) Dryer vents should be able to contain a Dryer Vent Fire for 30 seconds
  • UL listed only Flex and it should be replaced every, cannot be longer than 8’ and cannot be concealed in construction (run in a wall, ceiling, floor, crawl space, attic…etc.) That must be run in rigid pipe.
  • All dryer vents must vent to the out side of the building (not to a chimney, or into heating ducts, I have seen both) I am not a big fan of venting to roof or under decks.
  • Normal dryer vent runs to the out side should not be longer that 25’ less 5’ from that run for every Elbow used, a good dryer vent air flow should be over 1500 Cubic Feet of Air Per Minute at the termination and have a louver/flap that closes when the dryer is off and opens when the dryer turns on out side.
  • There should not be “bird cages” on the outside, they clog just like your “lint screen” in your dryer and would hold spark or flame in the vent in the event of a dryer fire
  • Never leave a dryer (or washer) running unattended.
  • Be sure the dryer is not pushed back so far it crushes or disconnects the vent.
  • Be carful with clothing that falls behind the dryer as it can increase the heat build up and cause a fire.
