Fireplace Gas log safety

Fireplace Gas log safety

While gas logs can replace wood as a heat source, no wood to lug in to the home, no smokey odors and burn cleanly there can be problems if not used or installed proplery, today while inspecting a chimney in New Canaan, I found a fireplace that had a nice set of gas logs installed and I noticed the gas line was copper (against code) and as I further investigated the chimney in the oil flue I found that copper gas line going through the oil flue, (against code, oil has Sulfuric acid that can easily corrode the soft copper pipe and is so dangerous it could have caused an explosion, disconnected now) there was also a bracket/stop that much be installed if supplied with the log set and was not (with out this bracket installed it can cause a back up of Carbon Monoxide into the home) A good Chimney Sweep (CSIA.ORG) would have found this, we did. With some work both their flues will be up and running again with out these very dangerous issues.
