Euthanizing a Pet is Difficult

I was recently asked why our organization, STARelief and Pet Assistance, would provide funds to pet caretakers who want to euthanize their terminally ill pets.

My Response Deciding to euthanize a pet is difficult, and never easy. Every pet, illness, and situation is different. This is particularly true when finances, unexpected events, and physical limitations to providing care happen. We have to acknowledge the realities of our situation.

There are no rules that can be followed for when it is time to help your best friend “cross the rainbow bridge.” Sometimes there are no good choices. As someone who has had to make this difficult and heartbreaking decision several times throughout my life, I believe that euthanasia is a blessing and gift to a suffering animal.

Each time I had to think of what was best for my pet, I had to put my feelings aside, I knew the loss would be great and my heart would ache for a long time, but my pet came first.

When pets are suffering, they don’t go down memory lane and reflect on all the wonderful people they have met, the great days they have had, or what their future may bring. They just know how they feel today. Pets live in the moment. This is one of the most wonderful things about them. Giving a pet a good home and a gentle goodbye are two of the greatest acts of kindness.
