Stamford Professional Fire Fighters Kick Off Annual Toy Drive

More than 1,000 toys were collected last year for underprivileged youth in the Stamford community thanks to the efforts of the community itself and the Stamford Professional Fire Fighters Association. And now, it's time again for those who can to come together and make the holidays special for children in need.

The Stamford Professional Fire Fighters Association, which represents members of the Stamford Fire Department, is kicking off its annual toy drive and is asking the community to drop off new, unwrapped toys at an Stamford Fire Department firehouse between the hours of 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. any day of the week. Gift cards, used by the firehouse to buy age-appropriate toys, and donations of wrapping paper and scotch tape are also accepted.

"It's a sad reality that hundreds of families in Stamford lack the ability to buy basic necessities this time of year, let alone toys for their kids during the holidays," said Donald Lowndes, firefighter and organizer of the drive. "Once again this year we are hoping to make a difference for over 1,000 children across Stamford and to spread a contagious holiday spirit all across our city."

Firefighters will be delivering the toys to children at the Franklin Street Shelter, the Salvation Army, the Wilson Food Pantry and pediatric patients at Stamford Hospital, as well as to selected families in response to Dear Santa letters.

"Numerous Stamford families struggle with the burden of finances. The holiday season can cause additional stress and hardships," said Brendan Keatley, president of the Stamford Professional Fire Fighters Association. "Our fire fighters are looking forward to helping our neighbors and spreading some true holiday joy this year."
