Community Corner

Champions of Housing

On March 13, New Neighborhoods, Inc.(NNI) leaders will recognize Governor Dannel P. Malloy as its 2012 Champion of Housing whose work on behalf of affordable housing at the local, regional and state level and support of NNI have contributed to making NNIFairfield County’s oldest active nonprofit developer of affordable owner-occupied and rental housing.

Wes Moore (youth advocate, Army combat veteran, White House fellow, Rhodes Scholar, social entrepreneur, and author of the NYT bestseller The Other Wes Moore) is our featured speaker. His own dramatic but true story is the jumping off point for his talk on the impact that community mentoring can have in redirecting at-risk
teens. NNI is encouraging those with the means to “BUY TWO tickets/BRING ONE teen leader or mentoree who would benefit from hearing Wes Moore /IMPACT
MANY.”

Champions of Housing Committee Chair, Mary
Marple Thies
(Co-Pastor, First Presbyterian Church, Stamford), Champions of Housing Honorary Chair, Bill Tommins (President, Bank of America– Fairfield County), and New Neighborhoods, Inc. Board Chair Phil Wolford (Chief Operating Officer, Patriot National Bank) and the Board of New Neighborhoods are hosting the annual luncheon that this year will honor Governor Malloy.

The choice of Wes Moore as this year’s speaker is consistent with our signature Champions of Housing
annual luncheons that since 2007 have aimed to raise awareness about how nonprofit affordable housing developers and managers like NNI’s can strengthen families, buildcommunities and help tenants and first time buyers to move up to and sustain economic self-sufficiency.

Proceeds from the luncheon will benefit NNI’s housing development and
preservation, management and tenant advocacy initiatives. NNI is a 501(c)3
nonprofit housing corporation.
