Plus size pole dancers add tremendous value to the community. This workshop series is specifically designed to teach plus size students the foundations of pole dancing. 

Over this five week course, The Diva will work with you on basic spins, floor movement, transitions and conditioning. Students will also experiment with tempo, eye contact, posture and moving with intent. Those brave enough are encouraged to perform at the upcoming student showcase!


Defining Plus Size (by Roz Mays)

All forms of movement conjure up a variety of feelings about one’s body image, particularly for those with nontraditional body types.  For plus size pole dancers, a heightened awareness of their physical differences can bring about a conflicting mix of emotions, ranging from immense pride to debilitating anxiety.

The term “plus size” generally describes women who wear a size 12 and up.  Common synonyms for plus size include thick, big boned, full figured and big girl.  “Curvy” has recently soared into popularity as the trendy new term for voluptuousness.  Less endearing labels, such as fat or obese, have evolved to carry the same damnation as drug addict and convict.  Although untrue, too many people base their interactions with plus size dancers on asinine assumptions like these.

The truths are:

  • Not every plus size person wants to lose weight, nor are they ashamed of their size

  • Struggles with weight go far beyond poor eating habits

  • Plus size pole dancers can be as equally sexual as traditional dancers

  • Weight alone does not dictate a person’s fitness level

  • Plus size dancers can serve as powerful athletic role models

 Examples of real concerns of plus size dancers include:

  • Can I honestly do this at my size?  Can the pole even support me?
  • Where can I find fun costumes that actually FIT?
  •  I’m too heavy for anybody to spot me.
  •  I HATE being the biggest person in class.
  • Damn, these large breasts are difficult to work around!
  • I’d be such a better pole dancer if I was smaller.  I doubt anybody will take me seriously.

Roz and Work It Dance and Fitness truly understands plus size dancers.  Rather than singling out specific people — which may be very insulting — we invite the entire class or group of people to give feedback about size diversity in our studio. Those who want to speak privately can come to us when they feel comfortable. AFAA and X-Pert Certified Roz "The Diva" Mays has dedicated many late nights at the gym to becoming a stronger and healthier pole dancing athlete. Among her finest contributions to the pole world has been creating Dangerous Curves: A Celebration of Plus Size Dancers. Her talents have lead to professional stunt work alongside Adam Sandler, as well as a Polesque championship in May 2011. She loves to lead obnoxiously loud pole classes at Sacred in Brooklyn, NY and world famous institutions Body + Pole and Crunch in Manhattan. 

When not hanging from a pole, Diva is usually making pancakes with Beyonce.
