Connecticut Zero Energy Challenge Winners to be Honored for Innovative, Energy-Efficient Homes

Awards ceremony to be held at Heritage Hotel in Southbury to recognize winners of statewide design/build competition.

As part of an effort to recognize energy-efficient homebuilding and residential new construction projects statewide, the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund with its utility partners, Connecticut Light & Power and The United Illuminating Company, will be honoring the winners of the Connecticut Zero Energy Challenge (ZEC) during an awards ceremony at the Heritage Hotel in Southbury, Conn. on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The top winners of the 2012 ZEC that will be honored are as follows:

  • First Place: Paul and Diane Honig, along with builder, Wolfworks, Inc., for the design and construction of their home in Harwinton, Conn.
  • Second Place: Preferred Builders Inc. and its president, Peter Fusaro, for performance house constructed in Old Greenwich, Conn.
  • Third Place: James Gainfort and Hayden McKay with builder, BPC Green Builders, for custom home in New Fairfield, Conn.

Videos showcasing each of the winning homes will be unveiled during the ceremony.  Attending the event will be Jamie Howland, of Environment Northeast and First Vice Chairperson, Connecticut Energy Efficiency Board, along with Ron Araujo, Manager, Conservation & Load Management, Connecticut Light & Power.

Supported by the Energize Connecticut initiative, the Connecticut Zero Energy Challenge is a statewide design/build competition that aims to educate homebuilders and homeowners about high-efficiency homes that consume almost no energy.  Over the years, ZEC winning homes have incorporated advanced design and construction techniques such as superior insulation, high efficiency heating, and ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) systems including geothermal heat pump technology, solar thermal water and photovoltaic systems, and advanced construction.  For more information on the Challenge, visit www.ctzeroenergychallenge.com.
