Stamford Mayoral Race Heats Up with New Endorsements

Democratic and Republican candidates for Stamford's top seat are touting new gubernational support recently, with both party candidates pulling high-profile endorsements from governors in the area.

On Tuesday, October 8, Democratic candidate in the Stamford mayoral election David Martin announced his endorsement by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, who had previously backed state Rep. William Tong during the primary election Martin would ultimately win.

"Let me be very clear," said Malloy during the announcement, "David has the skillset, the intelligence, and integrity to be Mayor of this great city of Stamford."

Tong introduced the Governor during the event, and echoed the endorsement of Martin, calling on the attendees to make phone calls, knock on doors, and dedicate their efforts to ensure Martin's success on November 5.

On Tuesday, October 15, Republican candidate and former Connecticut Lt. Governor Michael Fedele announced he had received the endorsement of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, an endorsement that comes following the support from former Gov. M. Jodi Rell, under whom Fedele acted as Lieutenant.

"I’m pleased to endorse Michael Fedele for Mayor of Stamford because Mike is a leader who understands what makes cities like Stamford successful," Christie said. "He knows that keeping taxes low, building coalitions and working in collaboration with the community is the way to accomplish great things.

"Mike isn’t afraid to step across party lines to get things done," he added. "His public service has been marked by putting the community’s best interests first – and that’s the best kind of public servant.  Mike Fedele would make an outstanding mayor."

While both have already declared victory in the coming November election, they will contend with two additional Independent candidates running for the same position, Kathleen Murphy and John Zito. Fedele has also gained the official endorsement of the Independent party line and will appear on Stamford ballots on both Republican and Independent lines. The group still has four of five scheduled debates left in which to square off before the general election.

While the mayor's race heats up, the Green Party also released a reminder recently that is has candidates up for several of the seats in the coming election, though none are running for the city's top seat.

"The party ran candidates for mayor in 2005 and 2009 but this year decided to forego the top office and focus its efforts instead on races for the Board of Representatives, as well as Board of Education and Constable," read a release from the party.
