Here's what's open and what's closed on Thanksgiving and the days surrounding it in and around Stamford

Day by day, here's what's open and what's closed (for each day, in alphabetical order by boldfaced keyword or name). Most links go to each organization's holiday information Web page:


Wednesday, Nov. 23

CLOSED EARLY:

  • Stamford public schools will be closed early
  •  and its branches will operate on their normal schedule.


Thanksgiving Day: Thursday, Nov. 24

SPECIAL EVENT

  • Intracity football rivals and will close the season on Thanksgiving. Kickoff is 10 a.m. at J. Walter Kennedy Field.

 CLOSED:

  • Banks—Expect every bank to be closed (TD Bank, which is often open on holidays, will close) although banks in Connecticut may open at their discretion on holidays if they give prior notice.
  • Bus service—the CT Transit website says buses will not run on Thanksgiving Day
  • State Courts
  • Town Dumps and Recycling Centers
  • Ferguson
  • New York Stock Exchange
  • Post offices
  • Schools in Stamford
  • State offices, including the state Department of Motor Vehicles, which will be open on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • 
  • U.S. government offices


OPEN:

  • Metro-North says it "will operate a holi­day schedule with extra AM inbound service for those of you going to see the Macy’s Parade. And there will be lots of late morning and early afternoon outbound service to get you home or to the folks’ house for that holiday dinner. In the evening, there is plenty of service to get you back home, too."

SOME STORES

  • Best Buy—closed until midnight Thursday/Friday
  • Costco—closed
  • CVS—open
  • Kohl's—opens midnight Thursday/Friday
  • —most stores open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. (they re-open at midnight, Thursday/Friday)—PDF
  • Starbucks in Stamford—(hours vary in each location, check company site for more details)
  • Toys R Us—opens at 10 p.m.
  • Walmart—opens at 10 p.m.

SOME SUPERMARKETS

  • Stop & Shop on West Main Street: 6:00 am-10:00 pm; on Bedford Street, 24 hours
  • All ShopRite and Grade A stores in Stamford and Norwalk—Closed
  • Whole Foods opens at 7 a.m.
  • Fairway Market is open 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Other businesses: open at each owner’s discretion.


Black Friday, Nov. 25

CLOSED:

  • Schools in Stamford
  • State offices, except for the state Department of Motor Vehicles (see below)
  • Stamford Government Center
  • U.S. government offices (except for post offices, which will be open)
  • Recycling Center at Scofieldtown/Rockrimmon Road


OPEN:

  • Banks
  • Stamford Town Center—8:00am-9:00pm
  • Bus service: the CT Transit website says it "will operate a regular schedule with reduced commuter connection service" this day. 
  • State Courts
  • State Department of Motor Vehicles offices, including the ones in Norwalk and Bridgeport, are open from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Transfer Station/Scale House and the Recycling Center at Magee Ave.
  • and its brances—open normal hours
  • Metro-North says that on this day "will oper­ate a 'Saturday' schedule with a lot of extra service during the a.m. and p.m. peaks, as well as inbound between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. It is NOT a normal weekday schedule, but there is plenty of service."
  • New York Stock Exchange (opens at 9:30 a.m., as normal; closes early at 1 p.m.)
  • Post offices
  • Stamford YMCA

STORES OPEN FOR EXTRA HOURS

  • Best Buy in Norwalk—opens midnight Thursday/Friday through 10 p.m.
  • Kohl's in Norwalk—open 24 hours, midnight to midnight
