Week in Review: March 13-19

Business

Just when residents thought that their local avoided the ax, the company that the Stamford store would be one of 28 more stores to close. The High Ridge Road store joins locations in Fairfield, Wilton, Danbury and Milford. The store is expected to close at the end of May.

Following the release of the the week before, Patch with representatives from non-profits in the area to find out how the figures would affect their services. While most are making small changes to acommodate the rise in population and diversity, most non-profits are adapting to the changing economy.  

Patch also with Mitchell Kaufman, the chair of the North Stamford Water Supply Committee, which recently held its first meeting. Kaufman stated that he learned a lot from the first meeting, including what residents in the area really think of the water contamination that surrounds their homes.

Police & Fire

Stamford police 30-year-old Shahdan Sallaj on Tuesday for kidnapping and sexually assaulting a woman outside of a Stamford nightclub in May 2010. Police say that he and Shefk Mahmutj met the victim inside the club and lured her outside. The two then forced her into a vehicle, drove her to a secluded spot in Stamford and sexually assaulted her. Mahmutj was arrested two days later.

Police also 26-year-old Bridgeport resident Robert Marhoffer on Thursday in connection with a home invasion that occurred at Ursula Place on March 13 in which a 15-year-old boy was tied up while the intruders stole electronics. Marhoffer is charged with home invasion, first-degree unlawful restraint, second-degree robbery and third-degree larceny.

Schools

Patch contributor Marion Herbert with New Canaan High School Principal Tony Pavia, who accepted a position as the principal of starting in the 2011-2012 year. Pavia spoke about his experiences as principal of New Canaan High and his new role as principal of his alma mater.

Herbert was also in the front row this week as students on the runway. The fashion show, presented by Stamford High School and Friends of Stamford High (FOSH), has been held for over 10 years to raise money for an alcohol and drug-free after-prom party for the senior class.

Patch contributor Caroline Sadowska headed to this week to with the Indoor Percussion Team, which is getting ready to head to nationals.
