U.S. Postal Service to Close Stamford Facility

The U.S. Postal Service announced Monday that the processing center on West Avenue would be one of two in Connecticut and about 250 nationwide that will be closed.

Faced with a substantial decline in mail volume during the past ten years, combined with increased operational costs and an untenable situation with its pension obligations, the U.S. Postal Service is aggressively scaling back its operations, closing down more than 200 mail processing centers nationwide — including the one in Stamford — and reducing its level of service to the point where it can for first class mail.

According to a report in the Stamford Advocate, the U.S. Postal Service announced Monday that the processing center on West Avenue would be one of two in Connecticut and about 250 nationwide that will be closed. The center in Wallingford is also slated to close, according to the report.

The sweeping changes — including massive cutbacks in the U.S. Postal Service’s workforce — mean first-class letters mailed in the continental U.S. will be delivered to homes and businesses in two to three days, as opposed to the current one to three days. Currently about 42 percent of all U.S. mail arrives in one day.
