The City of Stamford Continues with Heightened Security

The following is a release from Stamford Public Safety Director Ted Jankowski.

Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims of the terrible tragedy that occurred at the Boston Marathon.

The City of Stamford continues with heightened security.  As in all major cities, we have heightened our awareness, some visible and some not visible. We do not have any specific intelligence but we have to be prepared. Security was increased in the downtown area, at the train station as well as other prominent locations throughout the city. The extra security measures will stay in place until the city receives more information about the attacks.

The public should be alert and we ask them to be aware of their surroundings. If You See Something, Say Something. An alert public plays a critical role in keeping our nation and city safe. You are the first line of defense against acts of terrorism and we need your help.

It may be difficult to know what “something suspicious” looks like – but trust yourself when something doesn’t feel quite right.  If you see something suspicious taking place then report that behavior or activity to the proper state and/or local law enforcement or in the case of emergency call 9-1-1.

Factors such as race, ethnicity, national origin, or religious affiliation alone are not suspicious. The public should report suspicious behavior and situations such as:

  • An unattended backpack in a public place
  • Someone placing a package or luggage in a public place or area and walking away.
  • Anyone tampering with surveillance cameras, safety systems or other sensitive equipment.
  • People videotaping, sketching or taking notes at public places or on transit equipment, facilities or security equipment.
  • Someone trying to break into a restricted area. People entering unauthorized areas at public places, train or bus stations.
  • Attempts to abandon a vehicle in or near public places, transit parking facility, or cars in a parking lot without proper tags and license plates.
  • Suspicious activity or loitering around public places or transportation facilities.
IF YOU OBSERVE SUSPICIOUS BEHAVIOR
  • Do not take direct actionDo not confront the individual
  • Do not reveal your suspicions
  • Do record as many details as possible
  • Do notify appropriate authorities as soon as possible
IF YOU OBSERVE A SUSPICIOUS PACKAGE
  • Do not touch or move any suspicious objects
  • Do not use a cell phone or radio in the direct vicinity
  • Do evacuate the area to a safe distance
  • Do notify appropriate authorities as soon as possible
I’d ask all individuals to be vigilant. Keep your eyes and ears open.  Be watchful and vigilant of suspicious activity in and around public places and transit stations and report anything suspicious. You are the first line of defense “If you see something, say something”.

The State of Connecticut, Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, Emergency Management and Public Protection 24/7 toll-free tips line is 1-866-HLS-TIPS (1-866-457-8477).

Respectfully,
Ted Jankowski
Director of Public Safety, Health and Welfare
