Surviving the Stamford Heat Wave

How can residents of The City That Works still take care of business amidst one of the hottest days of the year?

Life and business go on despite the excessive heat, but with the right precautions, anyone can ride out the heat wave in the coolest ways possible.

in effect from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., the city of Stamford has taken measures of its own to keep the city cool during the heat wave, such as designating the Stamford Government Center and all Stamford and Fire and Rescue stations as cooling centers.

"The extremely high temperatures this area is experiencing can be dangerous, and it is important that everyone take precautions when the temperature reaches 90 degrees Fahrenheit and higher with the humidity at 60 percent or higher," Stamford Director of Health and Social Services Anne Fountain advised the public in a Wednesday press release.

Staying hydrated is the usually the best way to prevent heat exhaustion or heat stroke, but the city of Stamford provides residents with these tips to stay safe during the heat wave:

  • Use a Buddy System - If working in the sun, or if a friend is working in the sun near you, keep an eye on them and vice-versa. Monitor the elderly and the very young, also.
  • Schedule Outdoor Activities Carefully - Don't go out unless you need to, and consider reserving some activities for the evening.
  • Pace Yourself - Take it easy from noon into evening, and take breaks as needed.

In the right place with the right people, Stamford's heat wave can be endured, even enjoyed.
