Stamford's Alex Stein helped the U.S. legs/arm/trunk mixed four with coxswain team qualify for the finals on Sunday at the World Rowing Championships in Bled, Slovenia.

In Sunday's race, the crew finished sixth, which was good enough to advance to the Olympic Games next summer in London

The team also included Greenwich's Andrew Jackson, Eleni Englert (Oceanside, Calif.), Emma Preuschl (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Eric McDaniel (Weeki Wachee, Fla.).

The team finished third in its semifinal on Saturday.

The San Francisco 49ers on Saturday released former Stamford High School star Alex Joseph, who had three tackles, including one for a loss, and a fumble recovery in Thursday's 20-17 victory over San Diego.

The 49ers had signed Joseph off the Carolina Panthers' practice squad.

The Fairfield County Sports Commission recently announced its 2011 Sports Persons of the Year in each of the 15 communities the Commission serves.

The local sports honorees will be recognized at the annual Sports Night awards dinner, Monday, Oct. 17 at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich at 6 p.m.

In each of the 15 communities, a committee headed by a local town representative of the Commission, selected a Sports Person of the Year. Each winner was deemed to have had the most positive impact in their sports community from Aug. 2010-Aug. 2011.

The winner from Stamford is Ryan Haggerty, who was on the United States' hockey team that won a gold medal at the U-18 world championships.

The Fairfield County Sports Commission is a 501c3 non-profit organization that is the one-stop resource for the sports community in the area, with a mission of promoting fitness and personal development through sports. The Commission, with the exception of the executive director, is an all-volunteer group that gives financial support and its resources back to its communities, primarily focused on the 110,000 school age youngsters it can reach with its fitness awareness education programs.

Former UConn men's basketball star Kemba Walker will visit the Stamford Boys and Girls Club on Sept. 25 for a one-day clinic.

Aspiring basketball players from ages 7-15 will be taught the fundamentals of the game as part of the All Pro Sports Basketball Clinic, according to a press release.

The session, which will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., also includes a meet-and-greet and participants will receive an autographed picture of Walker, who helped the lead the Huskies to the national championship last season.

Walker was taken by the Charlotte Bobcats with the ninth overall pick in this year's NBA draft.

The clinic costs $60, but is free for members of the Stamford Boys and Clubs Club.

The JumpStart 5K Walk/Run & Family Fun Day, sponsored by the Center Women of the JCC, is set for Monday at 9 a.m. at the Stamford Jewish Community Center.

Registration is ongoing for the The Volvo of Stamford Tour de Greenwich XXVII, a 20-mile bicycle race set for Sept. 18 at 7:30 a.m. The race starts at Greenwich High School.

The pre-entry registration fee is $35 with a cost of $45 on the morning of the race. Each participant will receive a long sleeve race shirt and a water bottle.

The day includes a post-race brunch,which will take place during the awards ceremony. A winner's jersey will be presented to the champion in each age group.

Max Lippolis of Pound Ridge, N.Y., won last year's race in 49:04 to edge Cos Cob's Alex Weil by three seconds.

Kristin Budden of Rye Brook, N.Y., was the woman's champion at 56:53, finishing a mere one second ahead of Darien's Rose Shabet.
