The Stamford senior American Legion team edged host Middletown 3-2 on Sunday to advance to the winner's bracket semifinals in the state tournament.

Kosterich tossed the first seven innings to earn the win and Curto worked the final two for the save.

On Saturday, Tom Fabricatore tossed a six-hitter as Stamford upset top seed and defending senior Legion state champion Branford, 3-0.

After scoring its first run on an error, Stamford grabbed a three-run lead in the fifth on a two-run single by Curto.

Stamford's junior Legion team, which had a bye after winning the zone four title, hosts Enfield on Monday at 5 p.m. at Cubeta Stadium with the winner advancing to the main state tournament.

North Stamford appeared to be eliminated from the section one Little League tournament after a 10-5 loss to Fairfield American dropped it to 1-2 in pool play.

The team still faces long odds, but it received a ray of hope after East Haven handed Shelton its first loss in the tournament with a 12-6 victory on Sunday night.

If North Stanford defeats East Haven and Fairfield Americans handles Shelton National, North Stamford would climb into a three-way tie for second with East Haven and Shelton National at 2-2.

Since the three teams would be 1-1 against each other, the tiebreaker would be runs allowed per inning.

Here's where the teams stand: Shelton National, 1.125, East Haven, 0.889, and North Stamford,  1.688.

North Stamford needs three things to happen -- 1, a win over East Haven; 2, a win by as big a margin as possible, 3; a Fairfield American win over Shelton National by as lopsided a margin as possible.
