Stamford Police Give Update on Woodland Place Shooting

A suspect lying in wait and the operator of a Jeep that pulled into a driveway exchanged gunfire.

On Tuesday night, police responded to reports of gunfire at Woodland Place in Stamford's South End and on Wednesday, released new details in the incident.

As the situation developed, police announced they were looking for a Red Jeep with a black top and North or South Carolina plates. On Wednesday, Lt. Diedrich Hohn said that vehicle, a newer model two-door Jeep, was actually fired upon first and then returned fire.

According to Hohn, the vehicle pulled into a shared parking lot/driveway at 24 Woodland Place. A suspect described as a short, skinny black male wearing dark clothing and a hoodie opened fire on the Jeep, Hohn said.

The vehicle fled the scene while returning fire at the man who had been lying in wait in the driveway, which opens up to a lot behind 20 and 24 Woodland Place, Hohn said.

Hohn said bullet casings were recovered at the scene and multiple parked cars were struck by the gunfire, though an inquiry into area hospitals turned up no victims with gunshot wounds.

According to Hohn, the department is currently in the process of reviewing area businesses surveillance footage.

Hohn said he does not believe the incident is related to the Richmond Hill Avenue shooting out front of Cut Masters over the weekend that left one dead and two others injured, as the weapons were different. Hohn said 9-millimeter casings were recovered on Woodland Place, while 45-caliber casings were recovered at Richmond Hill.

Police are also tracking down leads offered by cooperative witnesses, Hohn said, including reports that a light skinned male possibly of Hispanic descent was spotted operating the Jeep. He said he believed the vehicle was sent there for a specific purpose prior to the ambush.
