Stamford Police Bust 3 Stores in Sting for Underage Beer Sales

With a 19-year-old in tow, Stamford authorities on Monday conducted a sting operation of six different businesses around the city to test whether or not the stores would sell alcohol to a minor.

Of the six tested, three failed. They sold alcohol to a minor either without checking for ID first or checking it and not restricting the sale after an ID showed the teen to be underage, Capt. Richard Conklin said Tuesday.

"There were no fake IDs used, nothing that should have been too tricky," Conklin said. "He either showed his real ID or he wasn't checked."

The three stores that failed the operation and the product they sold are listed below. Each of the arrests resulted in a charge of sale of liquor to a minor, release on a Promise To Appear and a court date issuance of August 2, 2013.

Shippan Liquors, 316 Shippan Avenue
Sultana Kaniz, 42, of Woodmere Avenue
Six pack, Coors Light

One Stop Variety, 1085 Hope Street
Juan Eduardo, 47, of Hope Street
Four Bud Light beers

La Placita Market, 268 Hope Street
Maritza Delearmen Placido, 61, of 33-25 76th Street in Jackson Heights, NY
Two Coors Light beers

All cases resulted in a referral being made to the Liquor Control Commission. Conklin said this could result in sanctions and fines.

"We look to get complaints from the community or from parents or we develop information from our informants," Conklin said regarding how the stores checked were chosen. "We give places that have failed a second chance to pass the test. We do them about four times a year."
