Six FCIAC Baseball, Softball Playoff Spots Still Up For Grabs As Season Heads Into Final Weekend

Stamford softball can clinch Saturday with a win over city rival Trinity Catholic

Due to the week-long rain, the conclusion of the FCIAC baseball and softball seasons have been extended to the weekend and remarkably six playoff spots are still up for grabs -- four in baseball and two in softball.

While the St. Joseph baseball team clinched the top seed with a 9-3 win over Stamford, the only club to actually secure a playoff berth Friday was the Fairfield Warde softball team, which upset Darien, 1-0.

The loss snapped the Blue Wave's 12-game winning streak and cost them a shot at the top seed, assuming undefeated Westhill handles winless Bassick on Saturday.

Six teams have secured playoff spots in the softball race as Warde (11-7) is joined in the postseason by Westhill (16-0), Darien (14-2), St. Joseph (15-3), Danbury (13-5) and New Canaan (12-5).

Darien, St.Joseph and Danbury have locked up home games in the quarterfinals and New Canaan can do the same with a victory over McMahon on Saturday.

Friday also was good for Fairfield Ludlowe (10-8), which climbed into the No. 8 spot with a 2-1 win over Ridgefield. The Falcons are one of five teams fighting for the final two spots.

Stamford (10-7), which lost to St. Joseph 2-1 Friday is seventh. Ludlowe is in a three-way tie with Wilton and Staples at 10-8, one-half game ahead of Norwalk (9-8).

Two games on Saturday will impact how the final standings shake out -Stamford at Trinity Catholic (11 a.m.) and  Norwalk at Ridgefield, which gets under way at 10.

Stamford can clinch a playoff spot with a win. However, if the Crusaders lose, they will drop into at least a four-way tie for eighth.

Ludlowe, Wilton (a 9-8 loss to Trinity Catholic on Friday) and Staples (a 5-2 winner over Greenwich) have finished their seasons. If Stamford loses and Norwalk wins, there will be five teams ending the year at 10-8, and it will be up to the league's multiple tiebreakers to decide the final playoff participants.

Here are the possibilies from the two remaining games:

-- Stamford win, Norwalk win: Stamford 11-7, Ludlowe 10-8, Wilton 10-8, Staples 10-8, Norwalk 10-8

-- Stamford win, Norwalk loss : Stamford 11-7, Ludlowe 10-8, Wilton 10-8, Staples, 10-8, Norwalk 9-9

-- Stamford loss, Norwalk loss: Stamford 10-8, Ludlowe 10-8, Wilton 10-8, Staples 10-8, Norwalk 9-9

-- Stamford loss, Norwalk win -- Stamford 10-8, Ludlowe 10-8, Wilton 10-8, Staples 10-8, Norwalk 10-8

Now on to the baseball race, where five teams are fighting for the final four spots - New Canaan (11-5), Warde (11-6), Wilton (11-6), Norwalk (11-6) and Greewich (10-7).

All those teams won Friday except Warde, which lost 4-3 at Darien. New Canaan defeated Westhill 8-0, Wilton edged Ridgefield 4-3, Norwalk pounded Bridgeport Central 12-2 and Greenwich rallied in the seventh to edge Staples, 5-4.

St. Joseph ((15-2), Danbury (13-4), McMahon (13-4) and Staples (13-5) have clinched playoff spots.

New Canaan, which hosts McMahon on Saturday at 4 p.m. and plays at Trumbull on Sunday, needs to win one of its final two games while Warde (at Danbury 10 a.m.) and Norwalk (Ridgefield, 10) also get in with wins.

Meanwhile, the winner of the Greenwich at Wilton clash (11 a.m) also will be guaranteed a playoff spot.
