[Updated] Boy, 12, Drowns in Cove Island Park Waters

Updated, 8:10 p.m.:

Stamford police announced Friday night the 12-year-old boy recovered from the channel between Holly Pond and Long Island Sound early that evening had been pronounced dead at Stamford Hospital.

Police identified the boy as Rashad Gross and said a preliminary investigation indicated the situation was a tragic accident, but noted the investigation remains ongoing.

The Stamford Fire Department, EMS units and Stamford Police Department, including marine units, swarmed Cove Island park Friday afternoon for reports of a possible drowning.

According to police communications, several males lost sight of a friend while swimming. The missing swimmer was reportedly 12 years old.

Marine units are currently focused on a connecting tributary between the Long Island Sound and Holly Pond.

Media and curious onlookers are being removed from the area now. A sightless with the search area is no longer visible.

Norwalk marine units also responded.
