The Hope for Ghana club at New Canaan High School is collecting used cell phones, iPods, iPads, laptops, e readers, hand held video game systems, and gps units from January 3rd until the 13th. There will be bins by the front office at New Canaan High School. The money raised will be used for high school scholarships for kids from the Good Shepherd Orphanage in Ghana.

The hope for ghana club?!? How about the hope for bridgeport club or the hope for hartford club or maybe the hope for appalachia club? Typical detached priveliged libs doing feel-good bs for themselves. Let's all get together after the tennis club for tea and crumpets to make ourselves feel good about how we are helping to save the world!

So what? Im sure you didnt donate, walt. So what difference does it make to you? Detached non-liberal, so enmeshed in hatred, that people who want to help people in ghana (or bridgeport or appalachia) need to take crap from some jerk who didnt donate a buck anyway. Start your own cause, --and then maybe some punk will take you to task? Cool man. Whatever.

If I can convince you I am from Ghana, can I get one of those Ipads?? Please?
Craig Zac December 29, 2011 at 12:59 PM
are they selling the donated items or sending them to Ghana? could they even use them there? Do they have internet service? If they will be selling them, when and where? Thanks!

Walt, You apparently don't know that education is FREE to ALL children in the U.S., so we don't need to do fundraisers in order to send them to school. Many kids in the world are not so lucky, and basic education is a luxury they could never afford. It's great that students in New Canaan are trying to address these global inequities... kudos to them.

Barbra, i too think its a good thing, just an FYI, I wasnt "Being a Jerk" i was trying to make a joke...sorts trying to Diffuse the situation here...lol But I would still love an Ipad!!! And if I do see them outside of DD, I would give them some $$ i always give to the people out there, unless they are holding a brown bag with a bottle in it. Sometimes I will even come out with some coffee or donuts for them, if its a cold day or rainy!

I know what I got: 4 more years of Herbst! Best present ever.
Mike McAteer December 30, 2011 at 12:29 AM
FYI, the students who run the Hope for Ghana club at NCHS have a personal stake in the people they help. They have spent summers there doing real work, not building resumes, as the cynics might respond.
Walt January 02, 2012 at 04:26 PM
Oh how stupid of me! What was I thinking! It's FREE! Everything is FREE! All kids in the US have everything handed to them just like all the kids in new canaan! I was watching a show on appalachia which showed the manses, the range rovers in the cobbled driveways... one segment showed a kid getting a new lambo for her sweet sixteen too! The schools in rural west virginia and tennessee consistently outperform the rest of the country and take up most slots in ivy league schools. I have five or six ipad ones that are just unacceptable now that the two is out, where can I donate them? Or should I find the few kids in bridgeport who don't have one yet and are willing to risk the scorn of their classmates by being seen with an ipad 1? Maybe I'll forego the vacay in st. barts this year and send the money to ghana. After all, they have oil and we'll need to exploit that soon, right?
sebastian dangerfield January 02, 2012 at 05:29 PM
walt-- nice rant. Like I say, if you want to start a foundation to help appalachia, feel free. It requires work, dedication, and some organization. I dont think you are right to bash these people who have found a cause they want to help. Because these people want to help people in Ghana doesnt force you to donate, nor does it exclude your ability to donate to the ones you believe in. Its a ridiculous posture to rank on people who are trying to help others, simply because you were so incredibly smart and were able to identify needs in this country as well. Go ahead donate your phone to west va. ???????? jeez
Ed Infurna January 02, 2012 at 05:30 PM
@wait. Here's an idea. If you feel strongly about helping kids in Appalachia, rather than Ghana, that's great. Why do YOU do something with your boundless energy, enthusiasm, and clear abilities to positively influence and lead people towards a goal, and take the lead in developing a plan to get that done? Or is your role in life simply to criticize the actions of others, anonymously, by computer, while not having to actually do anything productive yourself? (Great management technique: When a complainer complains about something not being done, put them in charge of getting it done. Either they act, and get it done, or they do nothing, and hopefully shut up. Which will be the case here?)
Craig Zac January 03, 2012 at 02:21 PM
Hey alt, i'll take one of them free Ipads... Imnot too proud to take a handout now and again...lol I saw a show on the people in Appalachia, man do they have it bad, a huge portion of them are on Meth, a huge portion of them are toothless due to drinking massive amounts of MT Dew (for some reason) they even showed a woman who was giving her baby MT Dew in its bottle.. Imagine? it got so bad Coca Cola (or is it Pepsi?) even sent a bunch of Dentists out there to help with thier teeth!! School? forget about it, most of the kids live too far away and have no rides or ways to get there..they profiled a girl who lived with the Meth head momma and had to walk 7 miles to school every day and actually graduated and is now going to go to college!! it was very interesting to see.
