Most Stamford Schools Without Power, School Start Date Uncertain

With the "majority" of Stamford schools without power, the superintendent's office cannot answer for the future in regards to an opening date for the 2011 public school year.

Officials within the infrastructure of Stamford Public Schools are unsure of when schools will open for the 2011 academic year.

"Schools will not open until Thursday at the earliest," a represenative of the superintendent's office said.

According to the SPS website, schools have cancelled orientation for the 2011 school year, and the "majority" of SPS schools are without power.

Stamford High School's gymnasium is still occupied by displaced residents for the fourth day, and some of Red Cross's clients at the shelter have been present in the shelter since Saturday. As of Monday, more people were still signing into the shelter due to power loss and home flooding.

SPS promises an update on the status of school openings by Tuesday evening.  Currently, all Stamford schools are closed to staff.
