Himes Fights Stamford Post Office Closure

Through letters and staff meetings, Connecticut congressman Jim Himes has actively sought to stop the United States Postal Service from closing post office branches in CT for the past two years.

Congressman Jim Himes (CT-4) personally urged the United States Postal Service to reconsider closing Stamford's Glenbrook Post Office in a letter issued July 26, and it was not the first time that he's had to sway the USPS.

"The post office is currently looking for ways to save money, so they plan to consolidate a number of branches across the country," said Elizabeth Kerr, Himes' communications director.

In his letter, addressed to USPS District Manager Ed Phelan of Hartford, CT, Himes acknowledges that patrons of 370 Hope Street's Glenbrook Post Office have relied on it for "years, sometimes decades."

"The patrons of this branch have already begun calling their state legislators in droves to protest this action," Himes writes.

"Himes fought to keep these post offices open two years ago. That situation was similar to this one," Kerr said.

Himes and other local leaders were responsible for preventing the closure of GPS in 2009.

"The congressman's staff will be meeting with post office officials," Kerr said. One such meeting was planned for Thursday afternoon, and it is possible that there will be more, according to Kerr.
