Former Controller of Stamford Company Gets 4.5 Years For $3.4 Million Embezzlement

A Norwalk man who was formerly the controller of a Stamford company was sentenced to 4.5 years in federal prison Wednesday for embezzling more than $3.4 million dollars from the employer, authorities announced that morning.

According to Deirdre M. Daly, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, 64-year-old Thomas J. Turey was sentenced to 54 months in prison and three years supervised release for embezzling the funds from a Stamford market research company.

Turkey's responsibilities included aggregating the company’s monthly revenue and expense results, managing the company’s accounts receivable, performing financial analysis and reporting, and overseeing the company’s bookkeeper in his position as controller. He was also responsible for the company’s general ledger and was in charge of conducting the company’s bank reconciliations.

Turkey was found guilty of embezzling $3,462,435 from the company between August 2005 and January 2013 by writing checks to himself and a fictitious entity, then depositing those funds into an account he controlled. Ultimately, a majority of the funds need up in his online brokerage account.

He reportedly covered his tracks by making numerous false entries into the company's books and records to conceal the scheme.

Turey pled guilty to the crimes with which he was charged, which was a single count of wire fraud, on May 23, 2013. He was also ordered to pay full restitution to his former employer.
