Ferguson Library: Stamford's 'Unofficial' Cooling Center

Though Stamford’s official cooling centers remain Government Center and Fire Department headquarters (http://stamford.patch.com/groups/around-town/p/cooling-centers-remain-open-in-stamford), the Ferguson Library downtown is also serving in an unofficial capacity.

As temps raced toward 90 degrees Monday, breathless, sweating residents could be seen making for the A/C inside the buiding at the corner of Bedford and Broad Streets.

“We’re definitely busy,” said Linda Avellar, director of development and communications at Ferguson Library.

“Our summer reading programs is going on, so our children’s room is always busy, but we especially notice a lot more people coming in when it gets hot like this,” she added. “People heave a big sigh when they walk in the door. They’re all welcome. The library is a welcoming place.”

City officials have designated Government Center and the FD headquarters as cooling centers through today. Patch will have more details available on whether they’re extending those centers as they become available.

Meanwhile, the library is open Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m.
