Boy Scout Builds New Kitchen for Shelter

One volunteer works to make a difference at St. Luke's LifeWorks.

Joseph Smith has been a Boy Scout for a number of years and has decided to pursue the prestigious Eagle Scout level, which he has been working towards since February.

Becoming an Eagle Scout is no easy feat, as it requires a high level of commitment in addition to many requisites. Joseph needed to experience a position of leadership, which he has done over the past few months by leading and managing a scout troop. He must also complete an assignment that involves creating a project and managing a team for around 100 total hours of community service from the participating volunteers. is lucky to have been selected by Joseph for this project!

For several years, Smith has been coming to SLLW to work with a tutoring program for the children who reside here. He decided to continue his involvement with SLLW by organizing a group of Boy Scouts to renovate one of the kitchens in the Family Shelter suites. His team removed the old counters and cabinets, refinished and painted the walls, and installed a completely new kitchen. The entire project took three days.

Joseph and his team of Boy Scouts did a wonderful job — by the end of the three days the kitchen was completed and looks marvelous! The residents are extremely grateful, and the entire SLLW staff would like to thank the Scouts for their desire to serve and their willingness to give their time and energy.
