Teaching Children Sportsmanship through Basketball

Team USA won Gold and taught kids a valuable lesson in sportsmanship and teamwork.

By Cary May, Director of Basketball

With record-breaking performances game in and game out, including an 83-point margin of victory against Nigeria, the USA men's basketball dominance of the 2012 Olympic Games in London reminds us all, that despite increased competition from around the world, USA Basketball continues to be one of the greatest collection of athletes on a single team.

I hope that children were inspired by their heroes to pick up a ball and realize the advantages of taking up this amazing sport. But the message that I hope comes through most is the lessons in sportsmanship and grace. These are individual athletes at the highest level in the United States who came together as a unified team to represent their country with passion.

Putting aside their in-season rivalries and individual goals, members of the USA basketball team worked as a cohesive unit winning games, frequently by a large margin with grace and humility, rather than showmanship and ego. Equipping young athletes with the skills to win and lose gracefully as a team is essential.

Whether kids are learning to play or adults want to relive the glory days, go play some basketball.
