Sexual Assault is not something most people think about – unless it’s happened to you.
Based on my personal experience, I must say that before my connection with The Center for Sexual Assault Crisis Counseling and Education, I did not know how prevalent Sexual Assault really is here in our community of Lower Fairfield. I interned at The Center for 6 months. Shortly after it was over, I graduated from Norwalk Community College with my Associates in Criminal Justice and Ivonne, the Executive Director at The Center, offered me a paid part-time position as the Executive Assistant. I couldn’t help but jump for joy and say yes immediately.
Here at The Center we appreciate all of the help we get from our volunteers. While I was interning, I was also offered the opportunity to go through the hotline
volunteer training and become a “certified” sexual assault hotline volunteer. It
was a great learning experience for me! Our next training is starting this week, but we hold them three times a year. I find being a hotline volunteer to be very
rewarding – and if I could do it, you can too!
While a volunteer’s primary role is to help with the hotline (it’s staffed 24-hours per day/7 days per week), our volunteers also help us with health fairs, which are a great opportunity to raise awareness about our services, Fundraising and Events. And individuals with experience or students who are working towards a social work/psychology degree (or related field) might be eligible to help with support groups, with additional training. There are also internship possibilities!
I will be blogging weekly about sexaul assault, our programs, services, what we do, why we do it and all other stuff about The Center for Sexual Assault Crisis Counseling and Education. If you are interested in volunteering or if you have any questions please feel free to contact me at 203.348.9346 (or visit our web site at www.thecenter-ct.org).
