Stamford Cheerleaders 'Pink Out' for Breast Cancer Awareness

With a number of Breast Cancer Awareness events taking place throughout Stamford during October, the official month to don pink and raise awareness about the disease, every little bit helps.

During practice on Friday, October 18, 94 girls from Stamford's Gold Coast All-Stars participated in a "Pink Out," forfeiting their typical cheerleading garb for all pink outfits and collected money to donate to the Avon Foundation for Women.

The girls, ranging in age from 4 to 18, managed to raise $320 to donate. The Pink Out, brain child of Port Chester teachers and cheerleading mothers Louise Piccolino and Jenna Broems, involved special needs students attending classes at Port Chester Middle School creating hair bows from donated ribbon, which were then handed out any time a donation was collected.

"I'm extremely proud of all the teams and families that donated to support Breast Cancer Awareness," Piccolino said. "Many families, including my own, have been touched by this terrible disease. My sister-in-law is currently battling breast cancer. Other mothers at the gym currently or in the past have battled breast cancer. It's affecting a number of families right in our little community there. It's such a pervasive disease."

Piccolino said Gold Coast All-Star owners Amber Wilson, Stacey Friedlander and Samantha Longo loved the idea and were happy the efforts of their cheerleaders were so successful.
