Former Stamford Asst. Fire Chief Charged with DUI

The criminal investigation into allegations of Stamford Assistant Fire Chief William Smith being involved in a hit-and-run earlier this month has led to official charges from police, it was announced Tuesday.

Smith, 62, was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run incident on July 18 at approximately 2:26 a.m. along Dunn Avenue, Smith's street of residence, while he was operating a city vehicle.

Smith was arrested Monday afternoon and charged with illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

In the wake of the initial reports of the accident, Smith resigned from his position July 19. He was a 35-year veteran of the department.

Representatives from the police department said they did not have toxicology results on-hand to release a specific Blood Alcohol Level and deferred to the fire department for comment.
