Assistant Stamford Fire Chief Smith Resigns

Original story: 1:27 p.m., July 19:
In the wake of a police investigation into his involvement in an apparent hit-and-run car crash in a city vehicle, Assistant Stamford Fire Chief William Smith has submitted his resignation effective immediately.

Ted Jankowski, Stamford's director of public safety, health and welfare, said Smith submitted the letter Friday. "The City of Stamford holds all of its employees to the highest of standards.," Jankowski said.

In a press release Mayor Michael Pavia said, "This is a clear message to all employees of the City of Stamford, regardless of whether or not you are a 35 year veteran with an exemplary service record, as is the case with Assistant Chief Smith, the City will not tolerate this type of behavior."

Jankowski said, "He has had a highly distinguished  35-year career with the Stamford Fire. There is an ongoing police investigation and the city will have no further comment" until it is completed.

Smith was involved in a crash with a parked car on Dunn Avenue at 2:26 a.m. July 18.

According to a report in The Advocate, Stamford Police Chief Jon Fontneau said Smith was treated and released at Stamford Hospital following the crash and police are awaiting toxicology tests results.

Jankowski said an acting or interim assistant fire chief has not appointed "at this time."

Editor's note: This story was updated to reflect that Jankowski read in part, a statement from Mayor Michael Pavia.
