THE LOFT ARTISTS GALLERY presents

LINA MORIELLI

SKETCHBOOK: A Look Inside

A comprehensive solo show, featuring pages from many sketchbooks, the journey to completed paintings, sculptures and etchings, as well as an installation display for viewers to experience a variety of sketchbook styles from the 1970’s to present. May 4 – June 10, 2012 at the Loft Artists Gallery, 845 Canal Street, Stamford, CT. Reception: Opening night, Friday, May 4th from 6- 9pm.  Artist Walk and Talk, Sunday, June 10th at 2pm. Gallery Hours: Friday, Saturday, Sunday, noon- 5pm. Gallery closed Memorial Day weekend.

Lina Morielli was born in Montreal, Canada and raised in Darien, CT.  She has been drawing, making collages and building things since childhood and is a graduate of Parsons School of Design.  The inspiration for this exhibit stems from her love of process and she believes that keeping a sketchbook, whether thematic in nature or as a repository for her doodles, is key to the development of her work.

“Sketchbooks are very personal visual diaries and serve many purposes. They can be a repository for ideas or thematic and focused or just a vehicle to create freely.  There’s no right or wrong about what goes into a book; it’s all about how you feel and think at the moment”.

The sketchbooks on display range in time from the 1970’s to the present and when shown in this context one can clearly see the thread that carries through all of Morielli’s work, from drawings to collages, sculptures and paintings. Many paintings and sculptures will be on view alongside the sketch from which it was created.  Loft Artist Gallery director, Mark Macrides, said, “I was intrigued with this idea because it gives a personal glimpse into the process of the artist at work, which is an added educational component for the viewer.  This is a unique opportunity to see a very impressive expanse of work.”  Also on display will be an installation of sketchbooks that will enable guests to view books in their entirety.

Framed sketchbook pages will be for sale, as well as drawings, paintings, sculpture and etchings.

Morielli is a former Loft Artist president and received three City Arts Partnership Program grants to produce their Annual Open Studios and Performance Series. Over the years, she has also received grants to create and teach after- school and summer camp art enrichment programs for the I Have a Dream Foundation and Yerwood Center in Stamford and has also offered TV/Video workshops for high school students.  She has staged art workshops for corporations and art organizations, as well as private sessions in her studio.  Also, for the past seven years she has curated art exhibits for the Mayor’s Gallery in Stamford, featuring the work of area artists and community organizations.

Morielli is known for her signature heart sculptures that she began creating in 1987 after moving to Stamford.  She created wood and metal assemblages, but it is her wrapped metal pieces that caught the attention of art lovers and they are in over 100 private collections across the country.  This award winning work has been exhibited in many local venues with solo exhibits in New York, Los Angeles, and in Hartford at the State Capitol. She has exhibited at 22 Haviland Street Gallery in Norwalk, The Blue Door Gallery in Yonkers, NY and at the Upstream Gallery in Dobbs Ferry, NY.  You can see her work on permanent display at the State Superior Court House in the jury selection office, the Heart Institute offices at the Tully Center and, most recently, in the public rooms of the Governor’s Mansion in Hartford.
