International expert speaks on threats and future of New England Forests

Bruce Museum, Greenwich, CT

Prof. Gene E. Likens, Blue Planet Prize winner, internationally acclaimed ecologist, and pioneer in the study of acid rain is speaking at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut, on Friday, December 9, 2011, at 7:00 p.m.

In celebration of the United Nations International Year of the Forest, Prof. Likens will present, “The New England Forest Ecosystem: Ecological Values, Threats and Future?”  This timely discussion by Prof. Likens, coming on the heels of extreme weather and heated discussions about tree removal by CL&P, will explore the impact that human activity has on our local forests and the impact that the degradation of forests has on us.

Prof. Likens is the founding director and president emeritus of the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, NY, and Distinguished Research Professor at the University of Connecticut, Storrs. He has been a distinguished member of the US National Academy of Sciences for over thirty years. He is also member of the Royal Swedish, Danish, and Austrian Academies of Science, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society. In 2001, he was awarded the US National Medal of Science. Prof. Likens is known for his thought-provoking lectures and his ability to engage the public in the science of ecology.

The lecture is free to Bruce Museum and Greenwich Tree Conservancy members and students with identification. Non-members are $5 at the door. Reservations are required; please call 203-869-0376, ext. 420. Light refreshments and an opportunity to meet Prof. Likens precede the lecture, which begins promptly at 7:30 pm. The Bruce Museum is located at 1 Museum Drive, Greenwich, CT.
